Generally, professional writing, or technical writing, is writing for a specific situation, purpose, and audience, normally in a workplace setting. Trends in government and industry have created an unprecedented need for documents in print and electronic format that are easy to use and attractively designed. This need has provided new career opportunities for writers, editors, and designers, bringing about technical writing as a profession.

Students at Troy University have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor's degree in English with the Professional Writing Emphasis (PWE). Graduates with this degree are prepared for work as writers, editors, and web developers.
