"The Way We Worked," a Museum on Main Street Exhibit
The Smithsonian Institute's Museum on Main Street program (MoMS) created a traveling version of a National Archives exhibit that documents the history of work in America over the past 150 years. One of more than a dozen MoMS exhibits, The Way We Worked incorporates text, photographs, sound, and artifacts to examine how work became a central component of American culture since the Second Industrial Revolution that began with the Gilded Age.
MoMS partners with the Alabama Humanities Foundation to bring its exhibits to rural towns in the state. Alabama was able to secure a second year of exhibiting The Way We Worked, adding six more sites to those visited in 2013-2014.
The Cultural Arts Center of Dothan and Troy University Dothan Campus have partnered to bring The Way We Worked to the Wiregrass. The Troy Dothan Library, the final installation site in this remarkable two-year run, will host the exhibit May 19 - June 26, 2015. Visitors can tour the exhibit during regular library hours. It is free (so is parking) and open to the public.
The Exhibit
The Way We Worked installation consists of five kiosks built from multiple interpretive panels.
- Kiosk 1 is the Introduction.
- Kiosk 2 concerns "Where We Worked."
- Kiosk 3 notes "How We Worked."
- Kiosk 4 tells us "Who Worked."
- Kiosk 5 answers "Why We Worked."
In addition to the Exhibit, The Cultural Arts Center and Troy University Dothan Campus will host, co-host, or co-sponsor a number of public programs.
