The Diaries of Elizabeth Inchbald is a three-volume set that reprints the complete texts of the known diaries of Elizabeth Inchbald, an actor, playwright, novelist, and literary critic who lived from 1753 to 1821. Inchbald's original manuscript diaries are now held at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Volume 1 of this edition includes the diaries from 1776, 1780, and 1781; Volume 2 includes the diaries from 1782, 1783, 1788, and 1793; Volume 3 includes the diaries from 1807, 1808, 1814, and 1820. The edition provides a general introduction, three volume introductions, and textual and explanatory notes. A chronology of Inchbald's life appears in Volume 1, and Volume 3 includes an index for all three volumes. Additionally, the headnote for each diary provides extensive descriptions of the pocketbooks in which Inchbald kept her diaries. The edition also reproduces two images of Inchbald, photographs of the exteriors of three of the pocketbooks, and photographs of the interiors of all eleven diaries.
