Purpose

To enhance residents' understanding of the importance of their historical documents and photographs, and to preserve and make them available for researchers in the Wiregrass and across the state.

Workshops

The Wiregrass Common Heritage Project will host two workshops:

  • African American Genealogical Research in Alabama
    • 10 am -- 3 pm, May 21, 2016, at the Dothan Library Downtown Branch
      Presented by Ms. Frazine Taylor, author of Researching African American Genealogy in Alabama
      Pre-registration required.  Call the Library at (334) 793-9767
  • Preserving Your Family Archives
    • 10 am -- 3 pm, June 4, 2016, at Dothan Landmark Park
      Presented by Mr. Dana Chandler, archivist at Tuskegee University
      Pre-registration required.  Call Landmark Park at (334) 794-3452
  • Both workshops are free and open to the public.  Preregistration required.  Lunch will be provided.

Community Scanning Days

The Project also will host two community scanning days  We invite residents to bring 12 unpublished family archival items (letters, photographs, etc. No published material, please) to scan. The Project will provide copies of the scans to you as well as preservation materials for the scanned items.  The best items are those you know a good deal about.

  • June 18, 2016, 1-5 pm, Dothan Library Downtown Branch Community Room
  • June 25, 2016, 1-5 pm, Landmark Park Administrative Building Auditorium
