Founder of the theory of mixed hypergraph coloring, thereby opening a new direction in combinatorics. Established its core framework by introducing uncolorability, unique colorability, the lower and upper chromatic numbers, hypergraph perfection, the mixed hypergraph chromatic polynomial, and the chromatic spectrum. Developed the first algorithms for solving several fundamental problems in mixed hypergraph coloring.
