Troy University Arboretum

The Troy University Arboretum is located at 101 Pell Avenue in Troy, Alabama. It is composed of 75 acres of mostly wooded land adjacent to the University’s main campus and 18 acres within the Pike County Pocosin, approximately 6 miles east of Troy. The Arboretum was dedicated on May 11th, 1987, and is housed within the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at Troy University. The Arboretum is overseen by the Arboretum Director. The Arboretum provides outdoor educational and recreational space for students enrolled in classes at Troy University as well as local schools; scout groups; and the general public. It is available for activities such as field trips, classes, hiking, picnics, bird watching, nature photography, and the simple enjoyment of nature. The Arboretum is open to the public from sunrise until sunset seven days a week. There is no entrance fee. Over 8 miles of walking trails are available. These include the half-mile long Magnolia Loop and Meadow Loop Nature Trails. The Magnolia Loop Trail extends through mixed upland pine-hardwood forests into wetland habitat along a small stream. The Meadow Loop Trail passes through upland pine forest into an open grassland/wildflower area.
The 3,000 sq. ft. Forest Resources Educational Complex building provides classroom, laboratory, and meeting space for educational events. An outdoor classroom area provides seating and work stations for experiments. The 2.5-acre Mullis Pond is utilized as a research site by various classes at the University. |
