FAQ
- What is MediEvolution?
MediEvolution is a website devoted to the promotion of popular medievalism. In addition to its weekly webcast, it is a site for all sorts of information about things medieval – past, present, and future.
- What is “medievalism?”
“Medievalism” is typically described as the study of the Middle Ages, or the study of later responses to the Middle Ages, but as we are using the term here, we are primarily talking about responses in popular culture. This can mean almost any aspect of culture: Tolkien, Hollywood films, fantasy novels, MMORPGs, fan films, anime, graphic novels, toys, games, heavy metal music, you name it. It also still includes those things we normally consider “high” culture, or legitimate medieval culture.
- What does “medievalist” mean?
When used as an adjective, it means something showing medieval influence; for example, to say that “Star Wars is a medievalist film” recognizes that, while not produced or set in the Middle Ages, Star Wars has knights and swords and other medieval themes. When the word “medievalist” is a noun referring to a person, it means that the person studies the Middle Ages; for example, “Dr. Nokes is a medievalist” means that he is a professor of medieval literature.
- Is MediEvolution for scholars or regular people?
Both. Our philosophy is that there aren’t enough venues for medieval fans and scholars to interact. Medieval stuff is found all over popular culture because people think it’s cool, and MediEvolution is a place for everyone who loves the medieval.
- Can I advertise on MediEvolution?
No. MediEvolution is a production of Unlocked Wordhoard and Troy University, and is provided free-of-charge to all visitors. Those with books, events, or other products that they would like MediEvolution to review may feel free to send them or information regarding them, but whether these are discussed on MediEvolution or not is an editorial decision.
- Can I use MediEvolution webcasts in the classroom?
MediEvolution may be used for educational purposes only. Translation: if you try to make a quick buck off our website, we’ll have the University lawyers flay you alive.
- Can I get my website listed in MediEvolution’s links?
Sure! Just submit a link to us, and we’ll review the site. If we think it is appropriate, we’ll include it. Please note that the more medieval content, the more likely you are to be included.
- I’m a scholar. Is MediEvolution peer-reviewed?
The only reviewer at this time is Dr. Nokes. Articles published on MediEvolution should be treated like publications in popular newspapers and magazines on your CV.
