Decomposition Lab

In this lab your will observe the decomposition of hardwood and softwood trees by finding and observing trees in as many stages of decay as you can find, from standing dead trees to logs that have mixed with the soil.

Observe the condition of the log at each stage:
    Is the bark intact?
Is the log in contact with the ground?
Is there a change in shape, color, or texture?
    Is the wood moist?
What organisms are present and what role are they performing in the decomposition of the log?
Discuss what happens to a tree as it decays and the roles various organism play in decomposition.

Next you will observe the decomposition of hardwood and softwood leaf litter.

Starting from the top, work your way down through the litter until you reach mineral soil.
Note the color, texture and shape of the leaves.
   Note moisture content.
Note the presence or absence of fungi and other organisms.
Note the presence or absence of roots.
Measure the depth of each layer you can detect.
Discuss what happens to leaves from the time they fall from the tree until they are mixed with the soil.

Some of the organisms that you will encounter:

Bessy Bug: Odontotaenius disjunctus
Click beetle larvae ( Wireworms )
Centipede
Millipedes
Termites
Jelly Fungi
Coral Fungi (Basidiomycetes)
Foliose lichen
Crustose lichen
Gilled Mushrooms (Basidiomycetes)
Pore Fungi (Boletes) (Basidiomycetes)
Shelf Fungi (Basidiomycetes)
Cup Fungi (Ascomycetes)
Fruticose lichen
Leafy liverworts
Mosses
Wood Roaches
