PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: This is primarily a field course. The objectives of this course include learning how to use dichotomous keys to identify unknown insects, learning the field recognition characteristics of some common insects from South Alabama, and learning how to collect and mount insect specimens for collections. 

TOPICS:  This course is designed for you to learn various insects from southeast Alabama. Class periods will include lectures where you will become acquainted with the use of keys to identify unknown insects, the characteristics of insect orders, and how to collect and mount insects for collections.

TEXT: Required: Borror and DeLong's Introduction to the Study of Insects, 7th edition. Additional texts that will be helpful include field guide for insects of the southeastern U.S.

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL
2 pint or quart glass jars with tight fitting lids 
1 large plastic storage box with tight fitting lid 
Number 4 Insect Pins--available from most scientific supply companies.

INSECT COLLECTION:  Each student is required to collect, mount, and label an insect collection..
