Troy University is mainly a teaching university.  We are looking for people who are passionate about education.  However, we also believe it is important that educators pursue scholarly activities.  Some collaborative opportunities exist in the area.  For example, a local company is concerned about lead pollution and remediation.  Also, the biology department offers a master’s degree in Environmental Assessment and Management; chemistry faculty are currently active in that graduate program.

Tenure requirements

The decision to award tenure is based mainly on evaluation of a faculty member’s teaching, scholarly activities, and service.  The best way to demonstrate scholarly activity is to have peer-reviewed publications while at Troy University.  These may be in journals such as Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Chemical Education, and Proceedings of the Alabama Academy of Science

Direction of the department

The University encourages the department to offer an ACS-certified degree.  We are therefore working to meet the requirements for an ACS-approved program.  Faculty members have access from their offices to many chemistry, including all ACS journals.  Each faculty member has a password to access CAS on-line.

Innovative and experimental approaches to instruction are encouraged.  For example, several members of the department have attended POGIL workshops, and have tried POGIL in their classrooms.

Living in Troy

Troy is a small town with a population of about 15,000.  The waitress at your favorite restaurant will soon learn your name.  Pecan trees grow on campus and are abundant in Troy, so you may learn the trick of picking up two pecans and squeezing them so that the shell of one breaks.  Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, is about 45 miles to the north of us.  The beach on the Gulf of Mexico in Panama City, Florida is about three hours to the south (depending on how often you stop for boiled peanuts).  Lake Eufaula, on the Alabama-Georgia border is an hour’s drive to the east.
