Exercise 1: Drawing a straight line [fill the vertical page]
Exercise 2: Contour lines vs outline drawings
Drawing your hand a. tracing
b. blind contour
c. contour
HW=choose a single complex object as subject matter for the following 6 class days
Bring this object to class each day along with the necessary materials each day specifies.
Aug/26: Exercise 3: Continuous Line Drawings
Draw your object from six different sides using #6 or ebony pencil
In using a continuous line you do not pick up your pencil until you are finished with your drawing.
These six drawings should fit on a single page
Aug/31 Exercise 4: Picture plane
Vertical or horizontal format; open or closed form
Draw your object from two different points of view [looking up/ down/straight ahead].
Make one object fit perfectly on the page and the other so large it goes off the page.
Use vine charcoal and focus on the various ways you can make a line to show sensitivity.
Sep/02 Exercise 5: Modeling from light to dark
Use charcoal to draw your object large on the page. Model using at least three values: light,
middle, and dark. Focus on the planes and shapes that make up your object, note the value
shapes within each shape. Try using your finger to smudge the charcoal to make gray values.
Sep/07 Exercise 6: Value=Eraser Drawing
Using compressed charcoal blacken the entire page. Draw your object using
white plastic mars eraser and the kneaded eraser to lift up values. Focus on
light values, white lines, highlights, rework areas using charcoal to create
stronger grays and blacks.
Sep/09 Exercise 7: Value=Hatching technique
Using black and white conté on gray paper, draw and model your object
using the hatching technique. Do not smudge using your fingers.
Sep/14 Exercise 8: Precision Drawing
Using a #6 or ebony pencil draw your object three times: same size;
twice as large; twice as small. Each time make sure you establish a unit of
measurement to make your proportions correct. Model your objects using
the hatching technique. Do not smudge using your fingers. This is your last
object drawing assignment. A viewfinder will help you in producing
accurate drawings.
Sep/16 Exercise 9: Precision Drawing=Bicycle
Using a #6 or ebony pencil draw the bicycle as precise as possible use the following: a viewfinder; measuring with your pencil.

Sep/23 Exercise 11: Lemons
Make a drawing of lemons in conté using the following: Circles; Unit of Measurement; Linear Perspective; Atmospheric Perspective; Chiaroscuro;

Sep/28 Exercise 12: Ellipse=Cones, Spheres, and Cylinders
Create a composition using these shapes, focus on achieving depth, accurate
measurement
Sep/30 Exercise 13: Drapery
Create a composition in charcoal or conté using drapery.
Oct/05 Exercise 14: Using a view finder=Drapery, Bottles and lemons
Create a composition in charcoal or conté of bottles, lemons and drapery.
Oct/07 Midterm: Portfolios due by 4:00. [Bring to Room 105]
Portfolio consists of Exercises 1-14 only.
Your work must be in a folder clearly labels with your name and phone number on the
outside of the folder.
