| Description: |
Williamsburg Charter High School is a very successful inner city charter high school. We admit students by lottery from many of the poorest areas of Brooklyn. They are often two years below grade level. Our goal is to bring them to grade level and through high school in four, sometimes five years; to replace gang identity with school identity; and to prepare them for college -- usually the first in the family. About 65% are native Spanish speakers (but not literate in Spanish); others speak dialectical urban English rather than standard English; and some speak Arabic or Polish. The school decided to make three years of Latin the mandatory language requirement for all students, largely with intention of improving vocabulary, raising SAT scores, improving their writing, and providing a deeper cultural/historical experience than modern languages provide. We now have 700 students at three levels in Latin. The decision and the experience have played a major formative role in the school's identity. We selected the Cambridge Latin Course as the curriculum we use. We urge the faculty to use modern spoken language teaching techniques as much as possible in order to create an exciting and fun environment. The project has become a major experiment in teaching Latin to inner city students in a non-elite environment. It's still evolving very much as we learn from them and they from us. The curriculum is also continuing to evolve as more and more students progress to higher levels. We hope to add a fourth tier of elective literature courses in the coming year. We use the Cambridge Latin testing program during the school year. We administer the National Latin Exam and the National Mythology Exam each year, and we administer the New York State Regents Latin exam at the end of the third year as a final evaluation. We do not currently teach AP Latin (the program itself is in transition). Students may elect to take the SAT II Latin if they wish, for which we will provide preparatory assistance. We have been authorized by the State to open two new high schools next year, each also requiring Latin, and bringing our Latin student population to 1200. The three schools will be housed in a wonderful new 8-story building at the intersection of Bushwick and Flushing Avenues deep in the heart of inner Brooklyn as well as at our original site on McCarren Park near the arts and music district of North Williamsburg. Salaries are somewhat higher than the New York City UFT scale; and benefits are excellent. Classes are one hour long; school day from 8 till 4; class sizes 22 to 25; load: four classes per teacher per day; three preps plus lunch. Record keeping is completely done on line, as are lessons. Additional pay available for clubs, Saturday test preparation, and summer school. We require virtually all teachers to have state certification in NY or in a state with NY reciprocal certification; or to be in a certification program, such as the Master's degree program at Hunter College of CUNY. Candidates are expected to visit the school for an interview, and to present a sample lesson to students. Please send a cover letter, vita, and any accompanying materials to: Patrick Kern, Assistant to the President/CEO, pkern@believeschools.org. For more information on or questions about the position, contact Language Department Chair Dr. Ron Janoff at drjanoff@thewcs.org |

| Description: |
Latin I/II Instructor. The Baltimore Freedom Academy is a 6-12 public charter school located in Baltimore City, MD in its last phase of growth as we add an 8th grade. We are seeking an instructor to teach 7th/8th grade students Latin as a pre-requisite for their progression to Spanish and as a basis for their understanding of the English language at a high level. We implement an inquiry-based curriculum and encourage faculty to use creative methods to promote student exploration of content. A combination of cultural/historical instruction as a support for language instruction is desired and welcomed. The Latin teacher will be building a program for our middle grades division, which is in its second year of existence. Interested candidates should forward a resume, cover letter and statement of educational philosophy. No calls or faxes please. |

Our hope is to find someone with strong content knowledge and the ability to effectively communicate their knowledge to our students.
