| Description: |
This position is now closed. The Hotchkiss School, a coeducational boarding school in Lakeville, CT, is seeking an Instructor in Classics for a position beginning in the fall of 2009. The Hotchkiss Classics Department offers a rigorous program in both Greek and Latin that, using texts written by the ancients themselves, enables students to study the ancient world as intimately as possible. Three levels of Greek and six levels of Latin are offered regularly, including the AP Latin course. The Hotchkiss Latin curriculum follows a traditional approach that stresses vocabulary acquisition, grammar, and syntax during the first three semesters. Authors typically read through the intermediate level are Caesar, Catullus, Cicero and Ovid. After the first-year level, Latin offerings are divided into two tracks: a standard track and an accelerated track that leads more quickly to the AP course. More advanced coursework and independent study in both Latin and Greek are offered depending on the number of qualified students. This position will include the teaching of four sections of Latin and/or Greek. Applicants should expect to be actively involved in all aspects of the School’s programs through service as a residential advisor in a dormitory and as a coach during two seasons (or the equivalent). A bachelor’s degree in Classics or a closely related subject is required, and a master’s degree is strongly preferred. The ability to teach upper-level courses in Latin and Greek is required. Experience at the secondary school or college level is also required. Salary is competitive and includes year-round housing plus utilities and meals when school is in session. Excellent health benefits are part of the employment package. Funding exists to support participation in professional conferences, workshops, study and travel. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter with resume, including three references. |
