Discussion Center

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Here is a brief explanation of some of the questions you may have about the Discussion Center.

Can I put html tags anywhere in my posts?

No. You can not use HTML tags in any field except body of the message. The maintainer of the script has the option of allowing or disallowing any HTML in the Message part of your posting. If they disallow it, the script will just throw out everything in <>'s. If they allow it, your html markup will appear in the posting. It can't hurt to try.

Why are there colons in the message when I try to post a followup?

Colons appear in the message dialog box when you try to followup up on a message to indicate that those lines are quoting the previous document. The owner of the WWWBoard can decide whether they wish to enable or disable the quoting of previous messages.

Why didn't my post show up?

Your post most likely did not show up, because your browser did not reload the page, it simply pulled it out of cache. Please reload your browser and it should then appear.

Why are passwords required to use the Troy University Class Discussion Board?

There are two types of passwords normally used with Troy's Class Discussion (WWWBoard) Board. The first is required to post messages to the board. The second is used to read comments posted on the board.

The password required to read messages posted on the WWWBoard is set at the discretion of your professor. This prevents people outside your class from reading the comments posted on your discussion board. Plus, this option prevents the various search engines on the Web from indexing your class comments.

The password required to post to your class discussion board is required for all classes participating on the WWWBoard. This became necessary because several Internet companies discovered a way to send many commercial messages to the WWWBoards used by many universities including Troy University. Some of the messges being sent to this WWWBoard could be described as offensive.

Requiring a password to post information to this board is an attempt to make sure that the comments posted on the WWWBoard are from the students in the class and not from outsiders attempting to send unsolicited e-mail to everyone in the class.
