TENTATIVE SCHEDULE (watch for updates)
Remember:
o
Safety first! Don't take any chances.
o
Be prompt! If we run late, people will
be waiting on us.
o
Bring a notebook and pen, as well any
electronic note-taking devices you plan to use.
o
Bring your cellphone, and be sure the professor
has your number.
o
Consider bringing a voice recorder.
o
Consider bringing a camera.
o
Wear nice clothes.
o
Leave knives and weapons behind because
they won't get past the security checkpoint at the State House.
o
Don't bring unnecessary backpacks or
bags; they will slow you down at security.
o Bring rain gear. The forecast shows a 90 percent chance
of rain.
o
You probably already have indicated
that you are driving yourself or riding with someone else. But if you need a
ride, be at Wallace Hall before 7 a.m.
o
While in Montgomery, you can be excused
from participating in the scheduled activities for one reason only: that you
are conducting a news interview or otherwise collecting information for your
hometown newspaper story.
8:30
a.m. Ñ Meet
in the Cramton Bowl (stadium) parking lot on the north side of Madison Avenue,
where parking is free. There, the professor will give you a nametag, a
schedule and other information. We will walk or ride the shuttle to the
Alabama State House, which is the building near the Capitol where both the
House and the Senate meet. We will go through a security checkpoint to enter
the building.
9
a.m. Ñ Orientation session at the Alabama State House, 11 S.
Union St. Clay Redden, a former
multimedia reporter who is public information officer for the House of Representatives,
will conduct the orientation. Probable location for the orientation is the House
chamber on the fifth floor.
10
a.m. Ñ Meet in Room 609 to discuss the Legislature, legislative
issues and how to cover it all. Guests will include:
á Michael Doudna,
political reporter for WSFA-TV
á Kimble
Forrister, executive director of Arise CitizensÕ
Policy Project
á Rep. Alan
Boothe, R-Troy
á Bill Britt,
editor-in-chief of the online Alabama Political Reporter
Times
of some events may change if we and our guests are covering or participating in
breaking news.
You
are encouraged to use any time available to interview legislators and attend
committee meetings. But speak with the professor before breaking away from the
group.
Noon
Ñ Group lunch at the Folsom Grill in the Folsom Administration Building,
just north of the State House. We must eat as a group because Troy University
will pay for lunch, using funds provided by the Alabama Press Association
Journalism Foundation. After lunch, we will make a group photo on the steps of
the Folsom building.
1:30
