Getting Started with Turnitin

The Turnitin system is relatively intuitive, but if you have difficulties or need a quick tutorial, come see me.  To get you started, I’m providing you with brief instructions on accessing the system and submitting an assignment.

Accessing the Turnitin System for the First Time

  1. Using any Internet connection, go to my web site (http://spectrum.troy.edu/~robertson), click the “Turnitin” link on the navigation menu, and then click the “Access Turnitin” link.  OR  Go directly to http://www.turnitin.com.
  2. At the top, right corner of the main Turnitin page, click “New User.”
  3. Follow the prompts and answer the questions to set up your account on the system.  Along the way, you’ll need to enroll in this class.  You’ll need to enter the “class id number” and the “class enrollment password” (I’ll give these to you in class); then click “submit.”
  4. You’re enrolled!  Click “Logout” at the top of the screen when you’re finished.

Submitting an Essay to the Turnitin System

  1. Access the main Turnitin page as described above in Step 1.
  2. Enter your e-mail address and password in the boxes at the top, right corner of the page.  Then click “Sign In.”
  3. On the next screen, click the title of our class.
  4. The next screen will list assignments for the semester, along with due dates.
  5. Click the “Submit” button next to the assignment you’re ready to send to the system.
  6. On the next screen, find the “choose a paper submission method” drop-down menu.  Choose “single file upload.”  Do not use the cut and paste option because the system will destroy your formatting and cost you points.  Make sure your file is in one of the following formats:  DOC, DOCX, PDF, or RTF.  Do not upload files of any other type.
  7. Type your paper title in the “submission title” box.
  8. Beside the “browse for the file to upload” box, click “Browse” and choose the file name from its location on your computer.  Then click “upload.”  Wait a few seconds for the system to upload the file and then redirect you to the next page.
  9. The next page will be entitled “submit paper: Step 2 of 2.”  Make sure that the text shown is the correct and complete essay, including the works-cited page.  If it isn’t, you’ll need to resubmit the essay.  If it is correct, click “submit” near the bottom of the page.  Note that the formatting will be incorrect in this view.  The format of your essay may be wrong; don’t worry about that because I’ll be looking directly at the file you uploaded.
  10. You’ll see a page that says “You have successfully submitted this paper” and that has a “Turnitin Digital Receipt” that shows the paper again.  The page also shows your “paper ID,” the paper title, and your name.  The receipt, which you’ll also receive by e-mail, is the system’s confirmation that it has received your material.
  11. Click the “go to portfolio” link to make sure the paper is listed in your portfolio.
  12. When you’re finished, click “Logout” at the top of the screen.
