What is the Astronomy Outreach Program?

The Astronomy Outreach Program at Troy University is a free, online, seminar that aims to immerse high school students into the world of modern astronomy. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Who is involved in this program?

Participants will engage with faculty from Troy University, guest speakers, and other high school students in discussion groups which will cover many astronomical topics.

What will I do in this program?

Participants and instructors will discuss a variety of topics including astronomy in popular media, recent astronomical discoveries, and even just learning about cool things like black holes and dark matter!

Examples of Potential Weekly Activities

  • Read select chapters from Stephen Hawking’s a Brief History of Time
  • Learn the connection between spectral redshift and cosmic distance
  • Construct a pinhole telescope to view sunspots
  • Watch a documentary on interplanetary missions
  • Use real data to measure the distance to nearby stars
  • Learn about the evidence in support of concepts such as dark matter and dark energy
  • Use free, online planetarium software to explore the cosmos
  • Better understand extreme objects such as neutron stars and black holes
  • Learn about the mergers of those extreme objects and their detection using gravitational waves
  • Discover the many scientific tools that we use to explore the universe beyond our solar system
  • Hear from guest lecturers who are experts in their fields
  • ... and many more

Do I need to have a background in math and physics?

Nope! Prior knowledge of advanced mathematics and physics is not required as all discussions will focus on physical phenomena rather than processes.

How much does it cost to participate?

Nothing! Participation in the Astronomy Outreach Program is 100% Free!

Am I eligible to apply for the program?

If you are currently a Junior or Senior (or equivalent thereof) high school student, then Yes!
