Applied Studies Oboe
Applied Oboe Instruction

MUS 1118 - Applied Oboe (1-1/2)
Non-music majors and students studying secondary instruments should begin their studies at this level.
There are no audition requirements.
The course is open to any Troy State student.
Literature and requirements for grades will be established by contract between
the instructor and the student.
Students may sign up for a 100 Level class as many times as they wish.
Course Objectives:
1. Demonstrate correct fundamentals of tone production
2. Demonstrate correct hand, finger positions, and instrument position
3. Demonstrate correct articulation techniques
4. Gain familiarity with appropriate music
Course Content:
1. Private lessons
2. Study of practical considerations, physical adaptation, instrument and
mouthpiece selection, reed selection and reed adjustment
3. Analysis of clarinet performance for self-improvement in individual and
ensemble situations
4. Basic technical studies, etudes, ensemble literature, and solo literature
Course requirements:
Each student will be instructed through an individually designed course of study to meet the needs of the student. Requirements will include:
1. One lesson per week (minimum of 8 lessons)
2. Conscientious daily practice (30 minutes per day)
3. Performance at the end of semester jury or for the recital periods if instructed to
do so by the instructor.
Course Evaluation:
Grades will be assigned on the basis of:
1. Performance during weekly lessons - 80%
2. Performance at jury or recital as directed by instructor - 20%
MUS 2218 - Applied Oboe (1-1/2)
Music majors are expected to enter at the 200 Level.
Each new student will undergo an analysis of his or her present performance level. The applied instructor will place the student in the TSU sequence the first week of their first semester at Troy State. On or before the end of the third semester at the 200 Level, the student will take an Advancement Jury. If the student meets the requirements, he will advance to the 300 Level. If further work is needed, the student will sign up for additional 200 Level work as many times as necessary. The private instructor will make the decision if the student needs to play the Advancement Jury early.
The panel for an Advancement Jury should consist of three faculty members including the major applied instructor. This panel should remain consistent throughout the students applied series. The major instructor will establish specific criteria for advancement for each instrument.
Course Objectives:

5. Demonstrate knowledge of interpretation, expressive dynamics, and musical
ideas indicated by the period and common practices
6. Demonstrate the application of skills in teaching others
7. Acquire and demonstrate performance techniques including stage etiquette,
presentation, and dealing with performance stresses
Course Content:
1. Private lessons, small and large group instructional strategies, as related to
the concept of oboe
2. Study of practical considerations, physical adaptation, instrument and
mouthpiece
selection, reed selection, reed adjustment, and the organization of beginning
instruction
3. Analysis of oboe performance for self-improvement in individual and
ensemble situations
4. Basic technical studies, etudes, ensemble literature, and solo literature
Course requirements:
Each student will be instructed through an individually designed course of study to meet the needs of the student. Requirements will include:
1. One lesson per week (minimum of 8 lessons)
2. Conscientious daily practice (6 hours per week)
3. Attendance or performance at weekly student recitals
4. A jury examination at the end of each semester

3. Recital attendance - 10%

Music majors that progress at expected rates will progress to the 300 Level for their second full year of applied instruction. The student will undergo an analysis of their present performance level at the beginning of each semester.

MUS 4418 - Applied Oboe (1-1/2)
Music majors that progress at expected rates will advance to the 400 Level for their third full year of applied instruction.
The student will undergo an analysis of their present performance level at the beginning of each semester.
1. Students must pass the 300 Level proficiency test to study at the 400 Level.
2. On or before the third semester at the 400 Level a student may apply for Recital
Approval. All music majors must take at least six semesters of applied
instruction with at least three at the 400 Level.
3. The semester of the Recital Approval Jury, the student must register for an
additional lesson time designated Recital Coaching, MUS 498. The student
must retake 400 Level applied and MUS 498 until such time as the student
passes their Senior Recital Approval.
4. The semester of the students Senior Recital the student must register for
Senior Recital, MUS 499, in addition to their regular lesson period.
5. Any student may continue to take at the 400 Level for as long as they desire
additional instruction.
Requirements for approval for Senior Recital
At least three semesters at the 400 Level
A jury from the whole music faculty must approve a student for Senior Recital.
Approval and the Senior Recital must be done in consecutive semesters
Recitals must be performed in Troy
