The chemistry department occupies the top (3rd) floor of the new wing of the Math-Science Complex, which was completed in 1999.  Part of that building is shown above.  The laboratories are provided with fume hoods and a single-pass air-handling system that eliminate odors in the labs.

Experience with various instruments is necessary to learn chemistry and to prepare the student for the work place.  The department provides hands-on experience with many instruments:

       Spec 20 spectrometers

       pH meters

PerkinElmer and Buick Scientific atomic absorption/emission spectrometers

PerkinElmer “Spectrum One” Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer

       Spectral Instruments ultraviolet-visible spectrometer

       Bio-Rad high pressure liquid chromatograph

       SRI variable temperature gas chromatographs

       BAS electrochemistry system

       Turner filter fluorometer

       Abbe 3L refractometer

       Johnson Matthey magnetic susceptibility balance

Chemistry is an active science.  The campus library subscribes to fourteen chemistry research journals in paper.  Plus, nearly thirty chemistry journals are available on-line.  Faculty members use these to stay current, and to enrich their lectures.

The faculty members are pursuing various research projects, and encourage students to work with them on these projects.
